Weinviertel, a vast arc of viticulture in austria north of the Danube, extending along the borders of the czech republic, then east and south along the River March and Austria’s frontier with slovakia, its western edge abutting kamptal and wagram, and its southern fringes abutting the urban vineyards of vienna. With 16,650 ha/41,000 acres of vines, the Weinviertel is Austria’s largest official wine region, and produces more than a third of Austrian wine. Volume has gone hand in hand with modest prices and relative lack of cachet when compared with other wine regions, but it has also made the Weinviertel an indispensable feature of Austria’s passionate wine-drinking culture, and an increasing number of quality-conscious growers are carving a niche for themselves and this region among their country’s many wine sophisticates.
