Sicilian name for the muscat of alexandria white grape variety, sometimes made into wine, notably Moscato di pantelleria, although more usually sold as table grapes. It is very much less common in Italy than Moscato Bianco (muscat blanc à petits grains) and in 2010 there were 1,521 ha/3,758 acres. The rich, dark Moscato di Pantelleria is geographically closer to Tunisia than to Sicily, which administers it. In fact this is the only wine with even a modicum of international renown that is made remotely near the city after which the variety is named.
