I WANTED OUR FAMILY TO BE HAPPY. I wanted Brian to actualize his ice cream–making dream and I wanted our kids to be in the presence of happy parents fully enjoying their lives and both of their children. I also wanted to create a community gathering spot.
I was born and raised in New York City, and I’m proud to be a New Yorker for many reasons. Living in this city has given me many gifts that I cherish deeply. One gift is the way in which I’ve always been able to find community. People are everywhere in New York. We are stacked on top of each other in buildings and pressed up against each other in buses. We walk in large masses across busy streets. We are attracted to places where there are lots of people and long waits. And communities seem to spring up in the most unexpected places: in the subway or while waiting on line for coffee. Communities collect easily and while some are sustained, others are fleeting. A subway car erupts into song. A street corner becomes a political debate. The coffee line becomes a klatch. A park transforms into an after-hours club.
