Angeles “Ananda” Sánchez, home cook and caterer, Jimena de la Frontera

Appears in
Andaluz: A Food Journey Through Southern Spain

By Fiona Dunlop

Published 2023

  • About

The last cook in the book revels in the wild, forested sierra on the cusp of Cádiz and Málaga provinces. One of ten siblings, Angeles grew up in and still inhabits the pueblo blanco of Jimena, topped by a sprawling Moorish castle and surrounded by a sea of green. Yet her heart lies a half-hour drive away, along a sinuous mountain road that winds down into a fertile valley cradling the village of El Colmenar (also called La Estación de Gaucín). She comes here for spiritual renewal, to be with nature, to swim in the clear water of the Guadiaro river, to forage, and to spend time with two of her sisters.
