Miraculous macaroni

In 1537 Pope Paul III beatified Guglielmo Cuffitella, who had lived his holy life in Sicily more than 100 years earlier. He thus became il Beato Guglielmo: the Blessed William. The process of beatification calls for evidence that two miracles have been brought about by the person concerned, and in a twelve-volume book called The Acts of the Saints, published in 1675, we read that Guglielmo’s two qualifying miracles were both performed in connection with a plate of pasta! Both miracles also feature a certain Guiccione, who was the blessed one’s particular friend, and Guiccione’s wife, who was a singularly disagreeable woman.
