Buy only pasta made from durum wheat. Use a large saucepan, preferably deep and cylindrical. Make sure that the water is boiling and salted when you drop in the pasta. Do not leave the kitchen while the pasta is cooking. Do not overdrain pasta; it should be dripping with water. Use good ingredients for the sauce. Taste the sauce often.
