Layer cakes are made from cake layers stacked with fillings. The layers may be baked separately or one layer may be sliced into separate horizontal layers after baking and cooling.

Some of the recipes here utilize the layers referred to above, while others rely on special layers used just for the assembly of a particular cake. Feel free to experiment with different layers and fillings—guidelines for this are given, in the section on celebration cakes.
