Frankie became engaged to Peter and moved to Weybridge in the Spring of 1960, when she started working in the tea shop alongside Peter’s mother and father, Nana and Papa, who by this time had closed their own tea shop and were helping Peter establish his business. She lived with Peter’s family in Weybridge Park and worked behind the counter with Nana and also waitressed. The roles were clearly divided: women at the front serving customers, men out the back preparing the food. Mum’s previous job was as an operating theatre sister at London’s Orthopaedic Hospital. She swapped handling surgical instruments for cake tongs and switched patients for customers. If Dad was the soul of the tea shop, Mum was the heart.
