Walk away from the main rush of Saint Martin de Ré and over the little island and, next door to the harbour office, near a quiet stretch of houses whose fronts are covered with roses and beautiful hollyhocks, you will find L’Avant Port. This place is new and has only just opened, yet it is bustling with locals and visitors alike. The main room combines the modern and the old: thick stone walls contrast with an entire wall of glass at the back of the bistro, and each table is unique. This is the closest thing I have seen to a British gastro pub in France. It is a joy to be here as the room is lovely, and the view on to the harbour and of the buildings across the way is so pretty.
