Wind your way up the mountain from the valley below and, in the summer, you will arrive at the door of this pretty-as-a-picture Alpine eatery that sits at 1600m (5249ft). It was built in 1974 but looks far older. In the winter you will need skis, snow-shoes or a skidoo for access, but in the summer you can drive to the door or get there walking, via the meadow. La Bergerie is a family affair; François and Laurence (husband and wife) and François’s mother all work hard to serve you a meal in this amazing location. With views of huge mountains all around you, this place is perched up high on the side of the mountain and nestled in a little fold. Everyone who eats here is amazed at the enormity of the view. In the summer you can eat on the balcony surrounded by the grassy meadows and grazing sheep that have been brought up from the south of France to enjoy the rich grass and cooler air. In the winter there is a pretty dining room adorned with Alpine antiques and a warming log fire.
