We went abroad quite a lot when I was a boy to Spain, Malta, France and Norway, so I was exposed to all sorts of new taste experiences. Whitby was still very much in the throes of fish and chips and takeaways. I’d found a new liking for a variety of foreign foods, from gambas drizzled in garlic to smorgasbord. If we went out to eat in Yorkshire, perhaps to the Wheatsheafin Egton, or the Beehive near Sandsend, I would order trout with almonds or a rare steak, invariably something with a strong taste.
