In order to make a woven bread basket, a sugar board is required—the same sort of board used to make baskets from pulled sugar. The base for the board is wood or plastic, and there are an odd number of holes bored into it, into which metal pegs are inserted. Some patterns make round baskets, some oval, and others square. Also, on some boards the pegs are vertical to the base, while on others the pegs flare outward. Illustration A (on page 418) shows a sugar board with the pegs inserted, ready to accept the weaving. For this project, coat the base and the pegs with a thin coating of butter or shortening so they can be removed easily from the woven basket after baking.
