Before starting this book, my last trip to Dumfries to visit Ben Weatherall was a sea trout fishing weekend on the river Nith. The aim of this more recent trip was to shoot grouse on the grouse moors he bought with his brother about six years ago. He has about 600 acres, which are also home to a herd of Blackface lambs, which graze in their natural habitat on heather and other wild stuff. Ben recently added 20 Galloway cattle, which would also have been native to the area, and he sells this meat through his mail order company Weatherall Foods. Ben has a real passion for food and is partner in another company, Yorkshire Game, which supplies London clubs, restaurants and hotels with game in season.
