  • About
Whenever I think about Mexican food, the first person who comes to mind is Abigail Mendoza, the owner of Tlamanalli (a Nahuatl word for “offering”), in the tiny village of Teotítlan, Oaxaca. While many people come here for the traditional weavings and to shop for rugs, I’ve rarely been happier than when luxuriating over a three-hour lunch at the airy, tiled restaurant that Abigail shares with her sisters.

The three women are traditionally dressed with their thick braids interlaced with colorful ribbons and wrapped around their heads. Abigail is the chef and is well known to foodie insiders for cleverly marrying her family’s heritage of Zapotec cooking with her sisters’ weaving virtuosity. She was featured on the cover of the first issue of Saveur magazine.
