JOHN STODDARD was a champion of midcentury construction downtown, hiring New York architect John Norris to build Italianate offices on the waterfront, then a row of Greek Revival town houses on Chippewa Square. This Italianate home was begun before the Civil War, but not finished until 1867. Its front-facing gable and added double bay distinguish the wealthy planter’s home from the rest of the row. With cast-iron lintels, wide bracketed leaves, and a handsome, massive doorway, the house remains one of Savannah’s finest.
