The most important festival in northern China is the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year. This falls between 21 January and 19 February, depending on the phases of the new moon. It heralds the beginning of the season of fruitfulness and anticipates the harvest to come. There are many ancient and colourful rites associated with the festival, as the various regional ethnic groups celebrate it differently.
