Falling on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar (between 20 January and 21 February), Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year is a major holiday for Chinese people everywhere.
In the lead-up to the new year, homes are given a good clean and new clothes and hairstyles are worn, symbolizing renewal. On the eve of the event, there is usually a special family meal featuring a fish dish and, in the south, a special cake called niangao is made and pieces distributed to relatives and friends.
