The landscapes of western China are both sublime and bewitching. This vast area is humid and fertile, defined by expansive green rainforests, epic meandering rivers and majestic lakes, surrounded by verdant plains and foreboding mountain ranges to the west and south. The region embraces the large province of Sichuan, world-famous for its sizzling cuisine, as well as the municipality of Chongqing and the smaller provinces of Shaanxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou and Yunnan, where traditional ways of life still persist.
