The province of Guizhou was well known by the people of China for thousands of years, but did not come into world prominence until the 17th century, under the rule of the Qing Dynasty. The lush climate supports the growing of many tropical crops, including rice, maize, tobacco, tea and rapeseed. Much of Guizhou cuisine reflects the diverse but ancient culinary traditions of its 18 different ethnic minority tribes, although some of their tastes, such as the consumption of dog meat, are frowned upon today by people from other areas of China, as well as by the rest of the world.
