From Patten, Marguerite, Cookery in Colour (Feltham, Paul Hamlyn, 1960).
The 1950s saw the end of rationing, and was a decade of recovery and change. For some, it was a time to move forward, embracing modernity which, in the kitchen, meant new gadgets and an enthusiasm for convenience foods and patent mixtures. For others, it was a chance to reclaim the habits of the past, and, while many women sought to take advantage of potential domestic shortcuts and refused to be confined to the home, others gladly gave up their war work and returned to scrubbing their war-worn sinks.
