Elisabeth Ayrton was born in Surrey in 1910 and educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she read English and Archaeology. She has published four novels, a book on Doric temples, and five other cookery books: Good Simple Cookery, Time is of the Essence, Royal Favourites, English Provincial Cookery and The Pleasure of Vegetables (Penguin, 1984). Since the death of her husband, Michael Ayrton, the painter and sculptor, she has lived in Gloucestershire.
