Tomato sauce with mushrooms. After the onion and garlic have been cooked, add 1 cup of sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and continue with the master recipe.
Tomato sauce with sausages. Broil 4 sweet or hot Italian sausages until done. Add them to the tomato sauce for the last 15 minutes of cooking.
Hot tomato sauce. Add ¼ teaspoon or more hot-pepper flakes to the tomato sauce.
A rich tomato sauce. Swirl 2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil into the sauce when it is finished.
Tomato sauce with horseradish. Horseradish may be added to taste to a tomato sauce that is to accompany a meat loaf, grilled pork chops, and the like. It would not be suitable for spaghetti.
