Writing down a recipe is more than putting words to paper. Often it is the embodiment of an oral tradition mixed with a story that binds traditions of place and time together. The recipes gathered in this project may reflect the first time that many of these women and men have ever had their family’s traditional foods appear on paper. The process of transferring knowledge from an oral tradition to a written one is a way of memorializing the past, but the process is fraught with challenges.
