  • About
Melons belong to the Cucurbitaceae family and grow on vines. Ranging in shape from round to oblong, melon varieties are classified as either summer or winter melons. Summer melons have skin with tiny craters whereas winter melons have smooth skin and will keep longer after they have been harvested. Melons are high in vitamins A and C and calcium. The cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, and Crenshaw are all examples of melon.
Melons are believed to be indigenous to either Africa or Asia Minor, but no one knows for sure. Archaeological digs have proven to be of little help because melon seeds closely resemble cucumber seeds. To the best of their knowledge, archaeologists have been able to identify melon seeds found in India dating back to 2000 BC and in Egypt around 2400 BC.
