  • About
For consumers with ethical and/or dietary concerns with respect to large commercial chicken ranches, smaller egg producers offer the following alternatives:
  • Organic: eggs produced by hens that are fed certified organic grains only
  • Vegetarian: eggs produced from hens that are fed a diet consisting exclusively of plant-based ingredients
  • Free run: eggs produced by hens that are able to walk around the floor of the barn and have access to nesting boxes and perches
  • Free range: eggs produced by hens who have access to an outdoor run. In Canada and parts of the northern United States, free-range eggs are only seasonally available
  • Omega-3 enhanced: eggs produced by hens fed a diet containing 10 to 20 percent flaxseeds. Flax contains omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been associated with reducing the risk of heart disease
