  • About

In 1609 the English explorer Henry Hudson set sail from Amsterdam to look for a Northwest Passage to the Orient. On the payroll of the Dutch East India Company, he sailed his ship Halve Maen up the Hudson River, which was later named after him.

With the prospect of fertile arable land and a prosperous fur trade, the fundamentals of Dutch colonisation had been laid.
While the first settlers are always referred to as Dutch, many were Walloons from what is now Belgium, though at that time it was known as the Southern Netherlands under Spanish rule. The northern Netherlands (now still known by that name) had broken off from the South after the fall of Antwerp.
