  • About
Vlaai are almost all made in tins that have slanted sides, which means the base is smaller in diameter than the top. Measurements in bakeware shops always give you the size of the finished pie top, which can be confusing as the base of the vlaai is significantly smaller.

There isn’t a standard vlaai size, as there are also the tiny vlaaikes, only a few centimetres wide, from the town of Lier in Flanders, as well as the flamiche, which is the largest vlaai with its 34 cm (13½ inch) diameter. And the vlaai of East Flanders, which doesn’t have a crust, is made in an earthenware dish. On some occasions tins with a fluted rim are used.
