Donburi originally refers to a deep bowl, which can be made from wood, ceramic or clay. These bowls come in various patterns, and may have a cover. Today, donburi, donburi-mono (don-mono in short) or don are used to mean a rice meal topped with any ingredient. In a broad sense, cooked rice in a lunchbox topped with ingredients is also called donburi. Even non-Japanese food served in this manner is considered a donburi.
