In this section I have selected salad dishes that can be eaten either on the side or as complete meals in themselves. Some incorporate both raw and cooked items.
Traditionally, in the Caribbean, green salad was not a big item on the menu. Pickled beets, hot pickled cucumbers and slices of avocado were all served, particularly on buffets, but usually considered condiments or side dishes. The word ‘salad’ in Jamaica sometimes referred strictly to tomatoes. Today, versions of coleslaw and ‘tossed salad’ are popular everywhere.
