Bombes were originally made with ordinary ice mixtures and were moulded in round moulds, hence the name. This name was the more justified by the interior arrangement of concentric layers one on top of the other with only a very thin outer covering.
Nowadays Bombes are moulded in plain conical-shaped moulds with a round dome. The bombe mixture is a much finer one than it used to be.
