In the days when every manor house and cottage had its own herb garden, herbs had three main uses—in the cooking pot, the medicine chest, and the linen cupboard, where their refreshing fragrance scented clothes and sheets. Nowadays there is a renewed interest in growing herbs and town-dwellers often grow them in pots or window boxes.
