With the advent of metrication in the near future it is a good idea to understand the principles involved.
At the time of writing it is generally agreed that we should use 25 grammes to the ounce as the nearest easily workable figure instead of the exact conversion of 28.35 grammes for solid measures; and 500 millilitres to the pint, the exact conversion being 568 millilitres. As both these measures are slightly less than the exact conversion it ensures that solid and liquid measures are kept in proportion.
