Before I was the James Beard Award–winning host of a television series celebrating fish and seafood, I was the son of a sailor. I was born on the West Coast of British Columbia, and since I was a young lad I have always been on the water with a fishing rod in my hands. When I graduated from culinary school at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in 2001, the first thing I did to celebrate was head up to our family cabin to go fishing.
