Keith Floyd was born at Folly Farm, Reading, in 1943 and has held it responsible for his actions ever since. Educated at Wellington School in Somerset where, during the school holidays, he cooked for the first time when the mother of the family with whom he was staying fell ill and as a 12 year old was obliged to feed 5 hungry farmers for one long week.
On leaving school he became a journalist but the film 'Zulu' persuaded him to join the army resulting in his having to cook breakfast on a primus for a whole platoon on Dartmoor when the ration truck failed to bring the cooker. As a 2nd lieutenant in the Royal Tank Regiment he complained about the food and was promptly made 'messing member'.
