      The Mrs. John T. Gernon Collection of more than four hundred American cookbooks forms the heart of the Lilly Library’s cookery collection. This collection consists of essential cookbooks from early American history, including British cookbooks, such as The Frugal Housewife, and the first cookbooks published in America, such as American Cookery. Indiana University is strong in African American material, has a large folklore collections, and at its Indianapolis campus, a strong German American archive.
