Sometimes when you’re down in the dumps, or having a bad day, or just low on energy, if you’re anything like me, only a saccharine sugar hit will do. Too much of it can have a negative impact on your mental and physical health, but I’m a firm believer that a little bit of what you fancy can do the world of good sometimes.
I keep a Kilner jar of Pick ‘n’ Mix in my office at home for quick fixes in a slump, but there’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked biscuits or cake to make you feel comforted and slightly more relaxed. Maybe it’s a childhood thing, reminiscent of apple turnovers scoffed in the car, still warm from my Home Economics class, giggling with my dad or standing stirring Christmas cake mixture with my mum’s arms around me, both of us holding the spoon and making a wish. Whatever it is, the following simple recipes are some of my favourites – some old classics and some new delights, to give you a little boost on a bluesy day.
