It is necessary to know that in the United States of America only 16 fluid ounces go to the pint, whilst in Great Britain (by the Act of 1878) 20 fluid ounces make up one pint.

This makes a great deal of difference in working out many recipes, and those who use old ones should bear this difference in mind and calculate only 16 fluid ounces to the pint in all the cookery books of the United States and in those English ones earlier than 1878.

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, the Channel Islands, and the Irish Free State, all use the same liquid measures as Great Britain.
