  • About
The American hamburger saw a meteoric rise in popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, thanks to White Castle and its numerous copycats. That was followed by a postwar, coast-to-coast proliferation in the 1940s, when the burger became associated with car culture, and burger mania grew exponentially. The next obvious step was for America to export this tasty homegrown treat.

In the 1950s small operators like McDonald’s and Burger King figured out how to commoditize and franchise their burger businesses into global chains. The first to send its fast-food model overseas was Burger King, in 1963, when the company opened a location in San Juan, Puerto Rico. McDonald’s followed in 1967, opening its first location outside the United States in British Columbia, Canada. Today there are more than 39,000 McDonald’s and Burger King locations outside the States. That is an enormous number of burger restaurants.
