Victorian prosperity shows clearly in this 1865 picture of Leadenhall meat and poultry market, whose links with the City of London dated to 1411.
The most successful european cookbook ever published is Household Management by Isabella Beeton. Always referred to simply as “Mrs Beeton”, the book has been repeatedly updated in successive editions and is still in print today, more than 100 years after the original was written. Even more astonishingly, though the book packed over 1, 500 recipes into an exhaustive survey of every imaginable household art from selecting servants to table setting, Mrs Beeton was only twenty-four when she produced it.
