The Maine Lobster Festival began 56 years ago and today ranks as one of the top ten food festivals in America. In 2002 over 100, 000 people came to Rockland and happily consumed 23,200 pounds of lobster. That’s enough lobster that if you placed them end to end they would be 12 times taller than the Empire State Building. Ravenous visitors also chowed down on thousands of pounds of fresh scallops, mussels and shrimp, as well as several truckloads of hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, corn on the cob and ice cream, which disappeared during the five days of the festival.
