There are two main types of scallops in the North American market: sea scallops and bay scallops, which are both farmed and wild harvested. From a sustainability perspective scallops can be a bit more complicated than oysters and mussels. Farmed scallops, which may have a restorative impact on nearby wild scallop populations, are considered a “Best Choice” by Seafood Watch. Wild scallop fisheries that are well managed, as in the United States and Canada, can also be a good choice. The concern is with dredging and its impact on seafloor ecosystems.
