The river Seine winds its way from Paris to Rouen and thence to the sea through one of the finest agricultural regions of France. Along the highways stretching from Paris to the seaports of Normandy huge trucks loaded with seafoods, fish, butter, and cheese make daily runs into the capital.
The Normans, who were originally sea raiders from Scandinavia, settled down in this maritime region of northern France in the tenth century. There, despite being involved in the numerous wars between England and France, they developed a way of life that is still distinctive. Like their northern forefathers the Normans of France are seafarers, fishermen, dairymen, and great trenchermen.
