Apart from apples and pears, we’ve just about had it with British-grown fruit for another year. In my opinion, the most flavoursome, easily obtainable English apple of all – now in the shops – is the Egremont Russet. Almonds and chestnuts join fresh walnuts, hazelnuts and the closely related filberts as one of autumn’s main consolations.

Easy-peel citrus fruits such as clementines and satsumas are beginning to put in an appearance. Otherwise – this is a good time of year to become better acquainted with some of the less familiar seasonal imports, such as the sharon fruit, persimmon and custard apple.
