We celebrate regenerative agriculture with an annual festival on our farm, which we call Groundswell since it is a farmer-led, bottom-up revolution.
Quite soon, in what we call the future, everybody will be wondering why it took so long to realise that farmers held the key to solving so many of society’s problems. Let’s take a walk through this future landscape...
Farmers have learnt from Mother Nature that monocultures of crops, which used to be considered ‘good farming’, require more effort and produce less than polycultures of different crops grown together. Over the years, they have worked out how to farm these polycultures successfully. Growing a very diverse range of plants feeds the creatures within the soil, who in turn create the healthy soils that ensure high yielding harvests with minimal inputs. The plants now suck so much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and deposit so much into the soil that atmospheric greenhouse gases have returned to safe levels and the soil, with its extra organic matter, absorbs rain so well that catastrophic floods are rare events.
