Traditional hand-line fishing is in our blood, and it is what we have been born to do.

By Ryan Nienaber

Quite simply, Greenfish was born out of passion. I have been fishing since the age of five and from humble beginnings - working out of Mom’s driveway while in high school - our business is now a fully family owned and operated factory facility, supporting 25 factory staff and many small-town fishermen and their families. We are proud of what we do and how we catch our fish.

Due to its geographic location, Cape Town lends itself perfectly to great fishing. The warm Agulhas Current that runs down the east coast, overlapping with the cold Benguela Current that moves down the west coast, brings with it an abundance of nutrients and baitfish, followed by the pelagic species. Because of this, we have many coastal fishing communities. Traditional hand-line fishing is in our blood, and it is what we have been born to do. Our vessels are all under 10 metres long and have many restrictions compared to the industrial fishing methods that are out there. Our gear is far simpler, and the size of our vessels don’t allow us to access the Cape of Storms every day like the bigger vessels. We actively man each fishing line, catching one fish at a time with a single hook and line. Each fish is cared for and honoured individually. There is little to no by-catch, no destruction of the ocean floor, and no seals, dolphins or birds caught with our style of fishing.
