Edible Flowers

Years ago on Good Morning America I was asked to feature “California food,” including flowers and goat cheese. I had some nasturtiums and the requested cheese. The moment we were on the air, the hostess said, “I hate goat cheese and I think using flowers is silly.” That was the end of my three minutes.

This attitude about edible flowers has not changed much, and I think in America it has to do with a puritanical attitude about frivolity. Flowers are taken seriously in the garden, but treated with suspicion and contempt when on the plate.
