The Aztec truffle. A fungus that grows on corn (maize) kernels in a free-form dark grey or black mass. Absolutely hauntingly delicious, whether fresh (see it at the Chino Ranch vegetable gardens near Los Angeles) or canned. See the blue corn enchiladas.
