If you want something special but really easy for dessert, follow the lead of the French and buy in a little treat from your local pâtisserie. Any of the following finishing touches will add a new dimension to the plate.

Ice cream. Buy in one of the many high-quality varieties now easily available. Stack up layers of ice cream, sliced bananas and grated chocolate to make little winter knickerbockers.

Citrus crème fraîche. Stir orange or lemon curd into crème fraîche and serve with a bought chocolate tart.
