Although I’m more of a savoury person than a sweet person and I usually gravitate towards the sausage rolls and cheese straws on the buffet table, I do love a good pudding, or dessert, as they are mostly called nowadays. So, this chapter takes me back to the old-fashioned nursery puddings of my childhood. Sometimes a pudding was the main meal and the “afters” as we called them were a slice of bread and jam or just bread and butter. In fact, bread and butter was often on the tea table as a staple “filler” in nearly all homes during the 1950s and 1960s.
