Roe, Fallow and Red are the most popular, and the most used on our menus. Lovely, delicious and delicate, The Roe is especially abundant around Ryedale, and indeed, Yorkshire.

Originally native to Britain, and dating as far back as 4000 BC according to the archaeological finds that include bones, teeth and antlers. Unfortunately, these beautiful-looking animals were hunted to near-extinction in medieval times, dying out entirely by the turn of the 19th Century. They were reintroduced sometime after the Second World War, at around the same time as the mass replanting of forestry in the UK. They are obviously extremely friendly creatures, as they started breeding prolifically, spreading from Northumberland gradually ‘down-country’, hence, the vast numbers in our area.
